“Crazy Costume Dash” at Lums Pond State Park to help support the Children in Nature initiative

BEAR (Oct. 06, 2014) - Families, friends, individuals and children are invited to compete in “The Crazy Costume Dash,” a fun run for athletes of all ages and abilities, on Saturday, Oct. 11. Registration begins at 2:30 p.m. and the race begins at 3 p.m. Registration is open through the day of the race. Adults’ fee is $30, children 7-12 are $10, and kids 6 and under are admitted free of charge. $10 from each paid registration will go toward Delaware State Parks’ Environmental Education programs. Registration forms and more information are available at destateparks.com/adventure-race.

The race will include a one-mile run for kids and a 5K for adults. Registrants will receive a free race t-shirt while supplies last, and be entered into a drawing for prizes including free passes to Fort Delaware and the Killens Pond Water Park for 2015, a 2015 Annual Pass and a weekend stay in the Trap Pond campground.

After the kids’ one-mile run, there will be two waves in the 5K. Athletes competing for first, second or third place awards will start first, followed by runners who wish to stop along the way to trick-or-treat with their kids. Everyone will receive a treat bag and be invited to a fun activity after the race. All participants are encouraged to come in costume. Certificates will be awarded for best children’s costume, best adult’s costume and best team costume.

The dash supports the Children in Nature initiative and promotes healthy lifestyles, education, recreation and stewardship of Delaware’s natural resources. Lums Pond State Park has many other outdoor activities for families and individuals, including hiking, biking, fishing, boating, disc golf, picnic areas, playgrounds and the very popular Go Ape Tree Top Adventure zip-line course.

At the end of a full day in the park, participants in the Crazy Costume Dash will want to reserve a campsite and relax around a campfire. Campground reservations may be made online at destateparks.com or by phone at 1-888-987-2757. Additional information about Lums Pond programs and programs in all of Delaware’s State Parks is available at destateparks.com.
