New program: "African-American Fort Delaware Uncovered"

DELAWARE CITY (July 11, 2011) – The Interpretive staff at Fort Delaware State Park is excited to introduce a new public program, “African-American Fort Delaware Uncovered,” on Sunday, July 17 from 1 until 4 p.m. The program will be held in the Visitors Center inside Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island.

Amateur historian Roberta Perkins shares her research into the African American residents of Pea Patch Island during the nation’s Civil War.  These individuals, although often overlooked and always difficult to research, were a key part of Fort Delaware’s history. “African-American Fort Delaware Uncovered” will also be offered on July 31, and August 7 and 21. The program fee is included in the ferry ticket price.

Access to Pea Patch Island is by ferry from either Delaware City or Fort Mott, New Jersey.  Ferry tickets cost $11 for adults, $6 for children 2 through 12 and $10 for seniors and Active Duty Military (with ID). Children under 2 are admitted free of charge.

Reservations are suggested, but visitors may purchase ferry tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations may be made by calling 1-877- 987-2757 or visiting www.destateparks.com. Ferry tickets may only be reserved 24 hours in advance.
