All Delaware State Parks free on Black Friday

DOVER (Nov. 20, 2015) – With several large retail outlets extending their Black Friday hours by opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day, national sports retailer REI (www.rei.com ) decided to push back against the trend by closing all of its stores on Black Friday and giving its 12,000 employees a paid day off to enjoy the outdoors.

DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation is making it easy to join them by waiving daily entrance fees at all state parks on Black Friday, Nov. 27. Those willing to forego marathon shopping madness and opt instead for a day of hiking, biking, and enjoying nature and the outdoors, will find more than 100 miles of trails to explore in state parks throughout Delaware, as well as spectacular locations for bird or wildlife watching, and excellent picnic accommodations. Turkey sandwiches, anyone?

At Lums Pond State Park, the popular “Go Ape Treetop Adventure” is also offering free admission to zipline courses for kids 15 and under (when accompanied by an adult). Information and reservations are available at goape.com/family-friday.

All Delaware State Parks gates will open at 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 27.  Park offices will be closed. Use the hashtag #OptOutside on Twitter and Facebook to see who else is opting for a walk in the park with family and friends. Most people would agree that it beats standing in line at the mall!

Visit destateparks.com for more great ideas about fun outdoor activities and locations.
