Beck’s Regimental Band, Libby Prison Minstrels
to perform at Fort Delaware’s P.O.W. Weekend
DELAWARE CITY (Aug. 12, 2013) – Visiting living history groups partner with Fort Delaware State Park’s interpretive staff for the popular P.O.W. Weekend on Saturday, Aug. 17 and Sunday, Aug. 18. The weekend will feature living history presentations and special activities for all ages.
The musical theme will include performances by two Civil War bands. On Saturday, Beck’s Regimental Band will perform at 1 p.m., and on Sunday, the Libby Prison Minstrels will entertain visitors at 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
Living history and re-enactment units participating in the event include members from the 2nd Delaware, 2nd United States, 20th Maine, 1st Maryland, 2nd Pennsylvania, 30th Pennsylvania, 7th and 8th New Jersey, and the 2nd Maryland Company H Winder’s Rangers.
Weekend-long events include the processing of new prisoners, mail call, artillery and infantry drills, behind-the-scenes tours and a special tour of Battery Torbert.
Fort Delaware is located on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River and is accessed by ferry only from either Delaware City or Salem, N.J. (New Jersey departure at 9:30 a.m. only). Visitors are encouraged to check the ferry schedule at www.destateparks.com prior to their visit.
To enjoy most of the special programs, visitors should board the ferry between 10:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors wishing to enjoy the musical performances should travel from the Delaware City dock no later than the 12:45 p.m. ferry. No ferry departures are scheduled between 1:45 and 4:15 p.m.
Ferry tickets cost $11 for adults, $6 for children 2 through 12 and $10 for seniors, military, and veterans (with ID). Children under 2 are admitted free of charge. Picnic lunches are encouraged as there is no food concession on the island.
Reservations are suggested, but visitors may purchase tickets on a first-come, first-served basis at the dock in Delaware City. Reservations may be made by calling 1-877-987-2757 or visiting www.destateparks.com. Tickets may only be reserved 24 hours in advance or less.
