Bellmoor Inn and Spa Recognized as Delaware Green Lodging Hotel
Honored as First Green Hotel in Sussex County

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – The Bellmoor Inn and Spa of Rehoboth Beach was recognized today as the first hotel in Sussex County to receive Delaware Green Lodging certification. The announcement was made by Delaware Green Lodging partners – the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Delaware Hotel & Lodging Association.

Scott Thomas, director of Southern Delaware Tourism and a member of the Delaware Hotel & Lodging Association, presented the Bellmoor Inn and Spa manager, Drew Burslem, with the Delaware Green Lodging certificate.  “More travelers are selectively seeking green hotels. It’s wonderful to have the Bellmoor added to the growing list of Delaware Green Lodging properties. We hope that this will pave the way for more Sussex County hotels to join the program,” said Thomas.

The Delaware Green Lodging Program is a voluntary, self-certifying program that encourages hotels, resorts and other hospitality facilities to understand their impacts to the environment and implement pollution prevention practices. Facilities that meet Delaware Green Lodging requirements receive a certificate and window decals and can display the Delaware Green Lodging logo on marketing materials. In addition, Green Lodging hotels are listed on the program website and are eligible to participate in grant opportunities.

“The Delaware Green Lodging program is pleased to welcome the Bellmoor Inn and Spa,” said Crystal Nagyiski, manager of DNREC’s Pollution Prevention Program. “By implementing five basic green lodging practices, the Bellmoor has conserved natural resources, saved money, and enhanced their marketing potential as an environmentally-responsible business.”

The Bellmoor implemented five basic green lodging practices – recycling, water conservation, optional lien service, energy conservation and a “green events” package. In addition, they added sustainable practices to the way they do business – including purchasing locally grown produce and other foods, using green office cleaners, and purchasing from vendors that have an environmental commitment. As part of their marketing strategy, the Bellmoor offers a green meetings/events package.

“The owners, staff and guests of the Bellmoor Inn and Spa are very excited about being involved in the Green Lodging program” said Bellmoor manager, Drew Burslem. “Going Green isn’t just a trend; consumer attitudes are favoring green hotels. Rehoboth Beach has always been known for its natural beauty, and we are proud that the Bellmoor is doing its part to keep it that way.”

DNREC’s website includes an overview of the Delaware Green Lodging program, the checklist businesses need to complete to qualify and other information. A list of participating businesses and environmentally-friendly practices implemented is also included. Visit www.dnrec.delaware.gov/p2/Pages/GreenLodging.aspx
