Migrating Birds at Cape Henlopen State Park
LEWES (March 25, 2011) - Spring bird migration is starting to heat up, and Cape Henlopen is a great place to get outdoors and enjoy the sights and sounds that signal the return of these feathered friends. This year, the first migrating birds were seen in the park on March 19. Since then, they have been preparing their nests.
A park naturalist will lead a bird walk at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 2. The walk will begin at the Seaside Nature Center. Some binoculars are available to borrow, or participants may bring their own. This program is suitable for all ages.
Birders will also enjoy a stop at the Hawk Watch to see migrating birds of prey such as osprey, bald eagles and American kestrels. The Hawk Watch is staffed by volunteers most days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather permitting.
Visitors may also stop in at the Nature Center for news of the latest bird sightings, a view of the Osprey Cam or simply to get directions to other exciting features in the park. The Nature Center is open daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cape Henlopen State Park is located at 15099 Cape Henlopen Drive in Lewes, one mile from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal. Signs will direct visitors to the Nature Center. Park entrance fees are in effect.
Reservations may be made by calling 302-645-6852. Additional information is available at www.destateparks.com.
