to celebrate 50th anniversaries with June 29 fireworks display

Fishing pier to close at 6 a.m. June 29 to prepare for evening fireworks show

LEWES (June 24, 2014) – Cape Henlopen State Park and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry are both celebrating 50 years of service to Delaware’s residents and guests. In honor of the milestone, a special fireworks presentation will be held at 9:15 p.m. Sunday, June 29 from the Cape Henlopen fishing pier. Public access to the pier will close to at 6 a.m. that morning to prepare for the fireworks display.

Fireworks spectators may park in any designated parking area at Cape Henlopen, with limited parking at the pier. The bait and tackle shop at the pier will be closed on June 29.

This special event is presented by the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park and DNREC’s Delaware State Parks. The fireworks display is being provided by Pyrotecnico.

After the fireworks, visitors can avoid the heavy traffic exiting the park by reserving a campsite at Cape Henlopen’s popular campground. As an incentive, the park is offering a 25 percent discount on camping registration for the night of Sunday, June 29. In addition, families and individuals are encouraged to take advantage of Cape Henlopen’s public programs, including a kayak eco-tour of the Delaware Breakwater at 10 a.m., June 29 or kayak and paddleboard rentals to customize a paddling trip.

Campers arriving early on Saturday, June 28 are invited to tour Battery 519 at Fort Miles, learn about nature’s wonders around a campfire or visit the touch tank at the Seaside Nature Center. Those participating in the Delaware State Parks Great Parks Pursuit will be able to check several items off the list of activities, and three of the trails in the Delaware State Parks Trail Challenge are in Cape Henlopen.
