Celebrate the third annual Victorian KidsFest at Fort Delaware

DELAWARE CITY (June 8, 2011) – On Sunday, June 12, Fort Delaware State Park presents its Third Annual Victorian KidsFest.  Co-sponsored by the Fort Delaware Society, the day promises to be an outstanding day of time-traveling excitement. The park is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. (the last tram leaves the front of Fort Delaware at 5:30 p.m.).

Throughout the day, children will have a chance to participate in historical period games, watch a vintage baseball game, sign up for the Army, or help around the kitchen. An extra $3 donation to the Fort Delaware Society also gains admittance to the carnival tent with special kid-friendly craft activities, games and more fun. Proceeds help support preservation and interpretation of Fort Delaware.

As an extra treat, The Diamond State Base Ball Club is playing a doubleheader on the island at 1 p.m.  The Base Ball Club is a vintage amateur team whose name, uniforms and rules are based upon the original team that was founded in Wilmington in 1865.  June 12 is also the second day of the June POW Weekend at the fort.  Each month, costumed historical interpreters present programs based on a specific theme.  The theme for June is At the Home Front, and describes the effect of the Civil War on the people of Delaware.

Access to Pea Patch Island is by ferry from either Delaware City or Fort Mott, New Jersey.  Ferry tickets cost $11 for adults, $6 for children 2 through 12 and $10 for seniors and Active Duty Military (with ID). Children under 2 are admitted free of charge.

Reservations are suggested, but visitors who don’t have reservations may purchase tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations may be made by calling 1-877- 987-2757 or visiting www.destateparks.com. Tickets may only be reserved 24 hours in advance.
