Charter School of Wilmington student wins National Conservation Poster Contest
DOVER (March 18, 2011) – Charter School of Wilmington High School sophomore Olivia Wang Xu, age 15, of Hockessin, was presented a $100 check from the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) for her winning entry in the grades 10-12 category in the Association’s national poster contest. Robert Emerson, chairman of the New Castle Conservation District (NCCD), made the presentation on behalf of NACD on March 18 during the NCCD monthly board meeting.
“Olivia is the environmentalist at home,” said Shu Hong Wang, Olivia’s mother. “I told her about the poster contest announcement when I saw it online.” According to Olivia, she thought it would be a good contest to enter because it combines her interests in art and the environment.
Although she has entered poster contests before, Olivia has never won at the national level. Mr. Emerson and the board congratulated Olivia on her award and noted she is the third national winner from Delaware in the past three years.
The contest, sponsored by NACD, provides an opportunity for elementary, middle and high school students to convey their thoughts about soil, water and related natural resource issues through artwork. It also highlights the education outreach efforts of conservation districts and their state conservation associations, auxiliaries and agencies. The “Conservation Habits = Healthy Habitats” reminded people that conservation of our natural resources is important in every community.
Each year the poster contest starts at the conservation district level with winners advancing to the state level. First place state level winners then advanced to the national contest. Between Delaware’s three conservation districts, a total of 182 posters were judged this year.
