Cost-share assistance applications for cover crops being accepted
by New Castle Conservation District

NEWARK (Aug. 12, 2011) – The New Castle Conservation District will accept applications for cost-sharing assistance on cover crops beginning Monday, Aug. 15. Applications are accepted on a first-come first-served basis until all funds are obligated.

Producers and landowners actively engaged in farming are eligible to apply. Fields must be in New Castle County and eligible land must be following an annual crop (row crops or vegetables).  Perennial crops, hay or pasture fields are not eligible.

Drilled or lightly incorporated rye, wheat, triticale, barley, oats, forage radishes, and crimson clover or hairy vetch with rye are approved. Aerial seeding is approved for rye, wheat, triticale, and crimson clover or hairy vetch with rye. This year, homegrown seed must be tested and cost-sharing assistance is provided.

The cost-share rate for unharvested cover crop is $50 per acre while the rate for cover crop harvested for grain is $30 per acre. The planting deadline is Monday, Oct. 31.

A minimum of five acres is required per farm while a maximum of 250 acres per business entity is allowed. To be eligible for a payment, the New Castle Conservation District must approve the practice before planting begins.

The environmental benefits of winter cover crops include improving water quality by absorbing unused crop nutrients, improving soil health and reducing soil erosion.

New Castle County landowners may apply in person at the New Castle Conservation District office located at 2430 Old County Road in Newark beginning at 8 a.m. on Aug. 15.

For specific program details, please call the Conservation District at 302-832-3100, ext. 3. All District programs and services are available on a nondiscriminatory basis.
