Volunteers sought for spring cleanup day March 14

DOVER (Feb. 27, 2015) – The DuPont Nature Center at Mispillion Harbor Reserve, a DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife facility located in the heart of Delaware’s Bayshore Region, will reopen on Wednesday, April 1 after being closed for the winter. Spring and summer hours from April 1 through Aug. 30 will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. For the month of September, the center will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays only.

Prior to opening day, the DuPont Nature Center will hold a spring cleanup day Saturday, March 14 with two shifts, 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Projects include replacing sandbags, weeding, exhibit and tank set-up, and cleaning the center and grounds. Volunteers under age 18 must provide a parental consent form; volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, contact Dawn Webb Cox at

The center is also seeking volunteers for its 2015 season, and will hold two volunteer training days at the center:

  • 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 8
  • 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25

Participants will learn about spawning horseshoe crabs, migratory shorebirds, fish and shellfish to better educate visitors about DNREC’s DuPont Nature Center and surrounding Bayshore Region. Participants must be registered DuPont Nature Center volunteers to attend. Preregister for training by emailing

Special events open to the public during the 2015 season include:

  • Earth Day Celebration – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 18
  • 6th Annual Peace, Love and Horseshoe Crab Festival – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 16
  • Youth Fish-N-Fun Days – 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the following Tuesdays: June 23 (for ages 6-9) and June 30 (for ages 10-13)

Field trip opportunities and structured tours also are offered from April through September. To schedule a field trip or tour, or for more information on the center’s educational programs and special events, email or call 302-422-1329. Field trips and tours are offered free of charge.

Perched on the edge of Mispillion Harbor at the intersection of the mouths of the Mispillion River and Cedar Creek, DNREC’s DuPont Nature Center at Mispillion Harbor Reserve offers a variety of interactive exhibits, school tours and educational programs. Indoor freshwater tanks allow a close-up look at a variety of aquatic species, from horseshoe crabs to diamondback terrapins.

In the spring, the center’s large deck overlooking the harbor offers wildlife watchers a front-row seat for the spring spectacle of spawning horseshoe crabs and the migrating shorebirds including the red knot that depend on horseshoe crab eggs to help fuel their 9,000-mile journey.

DNREC’s DuPont Nature Center is located at 2992 Lighthouse Road, near Slaughter Beach, east of Milford. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information about the center and its programs, please call 302-422-1329 or visit DuPont Nature Center.

The DuPont Nature Center supports DNREC’s Delaware Bayshore Initiative, a landscape approach to restore and protect fish and wildlife habitat, increase volunteer participation in habitat stewardship projects, enhance low-impact outdoor recreation and ecotourism opportunities, and promote associated environmentally compatible economic development.
