DNREC Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Blotter Dec. 14-21
Reminders for the week: Selling deer or parts is illegal in Delaware

DOVER (Dec. 23, 2011) – To achieve public compliance through education and enforcement actions that help conserve Delaware’s fish and wildlife resources and ensure safe boating and public safety, DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife Enforcement agents issued 21 citations and a number of warnings for violations of recreational boating, hunting and fishing regulations between Dec. 14 and 21.

On Dec. 16, agents patrolling Route 9 near Taylor’s Bridge arrested Edward Ciociola, age 62, of Dagsboro, and charged him with driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, driving with a suspended/revoked license, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle at unreasonable speeds and failing to remain in lane. Ciociola received a summons to appear in court at a later date and was released from custody.

The number of citations issued between Dec. 14 and 21 by violation type included the following:

Wildlife Conservation: Trespassing on a wildlife area after hours (2), possession of unlawfully taken game (1), trespassing to trap (1), trespassing to hunt (3), damaging state property in a wildlife area (1), cutting plants on a wildlife area without a permit (1), no Hunter Information Program (H.I.P.) number (1).

Fisheries Conservation: Recreational citations: tampering with non-commercial crab pots (1).

Boating Safety: Insufficient life jackets (1), no boating safety certificate (1).

Public Safety: DUI (1), driving with a suspended/revoked license (1), driving an uninsured motor vehicle (1), operating a motor vehicle at unreasonable speeds (1), failing to remain in lane (1), reckless driving (1), disregarding traffic control device (1).

Other: Illegal dumping on state lands (1).

Are you AWARE?
For this week’s Are You Aware reminder, the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Section would like to remind the public that Delaware Code states that it is “unlawful for any person to purchase, sell, expose for sale, transport or possess with the intent to sell, any deer or any part of such deer at any time, except that hides from deer lawfully killed and checked may be sold.” Mounted deer heads are prohibited to be sold.

Also, although traffic enforcement is not the primary mission of the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Section, agents are fully trained and within their jurisdiction to take action if they witness moving violations that present a hazard to public safety.

Citizens are encouraged to report fish and wildlife and boating violations to the Delaware Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Section by calling 302-739-4580. Wildlife violations may also be reported anonymously to Operation Game Theft by calling 800-292-3030 or online at www.dnrec.delaware.gov/fw/Hunting/Pages/OpGameTheft.aspx .
