DNREC's Fish & Wildlife enforcement officers rescue deer that had fallen through ice

DOVER (Jan. 30, 2013) – DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife Enforcement officers recently rescued a deer that had fallen through the ice on Milford’s Haven Lake. Officers used the bow of a small boat to break ice and get close to the struggling doe, then “herded” the deer through the open water channel they had made back to shore. The deer collapsed in the water as it neared shore but was pulled to safety by DNREC Fish & Wildlife Enforcement officers Jeff Howell and Carl Winckoski. The officers checked on the deer’s condition throughout the day and by mid-afternoon she was recovered enough to return to the wild.
