DNREC partners with Nanticoke Hospital, DEA
on medication take back event on Oct. 29 in Seaford
SEAFORD (Oct. 24, 2011) – The DNREC Divisions of Waste and Hazardous Substances and Community Services have partnered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Nanticoke Health Services to hold a medication take back event in conjunction with the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Nanticoke and DNREC will co-host the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Mears Health Campus, 200 Rawlins Drive (formerly Health Services Drive) in Seaford.
The event is open to all residents who have unwanted, unused or expired medications that need to be disposed of safely. Unused medications that are flushed down the toilet can get into our waterways and drinking water supply. If thrown in the trash, unused medications can be retrieved by persons other than the prescription holder to be abused and/or illegally sold.
The process of turning in unused medications is completely anonymous, with no identification required and no questions asked. No aerosols and no syringes will be accepted. Officers from DNREC's Environmental Crimes Unit also will be on site and have all medications in custody at all times.
Take back events also will be held at other locations statewide. For other take back sites in Delaware, visit www.dea.gov or call 1-800-882-9539.
