DNREC Offers Free Estuary Experiences at St. Jones and Blackbird Creek Reserves
DNREC’s Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve is offering free estuary experiences this spring at the St. Jones and Blackbird Creek Reserves.
Spring Birding Hike at the Blackbird Creek Reserve
Friday, April 25 7 – 9 a.m.
Join a naturalist and a local birder and journey on a birding hike. Be on the look out for migratory song birds and raptors. The hike will take place on the Blackbird Creek Reserve component at 801 Blackbird Landing Road in Townsend. Please call 302-739-3436 to register.
Wetland Walk
Monday, April 28 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Join a naturalist for an approximately 1/4 mile guided walk to explore salt marshes along the St. Jones River. The walk will meet at the St. Jones Reserve component at 818 Kitts Hummock Road in Dover. Wear comfortable shoes and dress warmly. No strollers, please.
Estuary Hike
Tuesday, May 13 11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Join a naturalist for an approximately 1 mile guided hike to experience the St. Jones sub-estuary. The hike will meet at the St. Jones Reserve component at 818 Kitts Hummock Road in Dover. Wear comfortable shoes and dress warmly. No strollers, please.
Birding by Canoe at the Blackbird Creek Reserve
Wednesday, May 28 8 – 10:30 a.m.
Enjoy the beauty and serenity of Blackbird Creek by canoe. Join us and observe the various birds that inhabit the Reserve. Be on the look out for wading birds, mighty raptors, and song birds. Wear comfortable clothing. Life jackets will be provided and are required to be worn. Canoeing experience is preferred, but not required. The canoe trip will meet at the Blackbird Creek Reserve component at 801 Blackbird Landing Road in Townsend. Please pre-register one week prior to the program by calling (302) 739-3436.
Hike and Boat Trip on the St. Jones River
Monday, June 23 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Join a naturalist and learn about the history of the St. Jones River. Enjoy the beauty and serenity of nature by hiking and boating the St. Jones sub-estuary. Bring a bag lunch to enjoy at the Reserve and get ready to board our 24 foot skiff boat as we take our historical expedition onto the river! This program will meet at the St. Jones Reserve component at 818 Kitts Hummock Road in Dover, Delaware. Space is limited. Please pre-register one week prior by calling (302) 739-3436.
