DNREC Secretary Orders Spillways Lowered As Precaution for Approaching Storm
DOVER, Del. - DNREC Secretary John A. Hughes, in consultation with the Department of Transportation, has ordered the lowering of controllable height spillways in state ponds in anticipation of a heavy rain event.
“I’m not content in just assuming all lakes and ponds have capacity coming off recent dry conditions,” said Secretary Hughes. “I’d rather take the chance of lowering spillways unnecessarily than being unprepared for heavy rain and flooding.
Secretary Hughes noted that he and other observers with years of experience will be keeping tabs on the approaching storm at strategic flood-prone points along the coastline from Kitts Hummock to Fenwick Island.
“We’re particularly concerned about vulnerable areas in Delaware Bay beaches,” said Secretary Hughes. “Fortunately, past storms have taught us well and we have strong beach nourishment programs, we are prepared, DEMA is well prepared and we simply have to endure.”
