DNREC’s Polly Drummond Hill Road yard waste site to
close Jan. 11, 2016; will reopen next May Saturdays only

DOVER (Dec. 18, 2015) – Due to increasing costs for maintaining the site and limited funding for operating it, DNREC’s Polly Drummond Hill Road Yard Waste Demonstration Site in northern New Castle County will close Jan. 11, 2016, the department announced today. From now through the closure date, the site will continue to be open each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. until sunset.

At the same time DNREC was announcing closure of the Polly Drummond Hill site, the department also acknowledged that funding made available by the Delaware General Assembly will enable limited operation of the Polly Drummond Hill yard waste site to resume May 7, 2016 –  and thereafter open Saturdays only for receiving yard waste material.

Until then, and with Polly Drummond Hill’s imminent closure, a free alternative for Delaware residents dropping off their own yard waste is the Holland Mulch facility at 1034 S. Chapel Street, Newark, DE 19702. This privately-operated site, about five miles from Polly Drummond Hill, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday - Friday, and 7:30 a.m. - noon on Saturdays. For more information about Holland Mulch’s South Chapel Street site, please call 302-737-1000.

Current options in New Castle County for Delawareans to dispose of their yard waste material include:

Polly Drummond Hill Road Community Yard Waste Demonstration Site
Located near Newark in the Pike Creek area on Polly Drummond Hill Road about ½ mile north of the Kirkwood Highway. Current hours:  Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; 8 a.m.-sunset, unless otherwise posted.  Closed Monday through Thursday.

Closing regular operations Jan. 11, 2016 (to reopen Saturdays only starting May 7, 2016)

Commercial businesses, such as landscaping and lawn care companies, as well as municipalities, are not eligible to drop-off materials at the DNREC yard waste site.

Area residents wishing to recycle their yard waste on days when the Polly Drummond Yard waste site is closed may manage the material on their own property, arrange for a collection service, or use the options listed below. These private businesses offer yard waste drop-off and may charge a fee for services. For more information, particularly about hours for holiday operations, please contact each business directly.
