Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife to hold May 21 public hearing
on proposed shellfish aquaculture regulations

DOVER (May 1, 2014) – DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife will hold a public hearing on Delaware’s Inland Bays shellfish aquaculture regulations at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 21 at DNREC’s Lewes Field Facility, 901 Pilottown Road, Lewes.

The hearing will give the public an overview of proposed shellfish aquaculture regulations and an opportunity to provide comment on the regulations. Shellfish aquaculture regulations are necessary to implement a commercial shellfish aquaculture program in Delaware’s Inland Bays as authorized by the passage of House Bill 160 by the 147th General Assembly.

The proposed regulations include requirements for obtaining a lease – application, locations, issuance, marking, renewal, transfer, expiration, termination, condemnation and emergency relocation. The regulations also propose measures related to shellfish aquaculture gear and marking, shellfish nursery permitting and structures, harvester license qualifications, bivalve species authorized for aquaculture, activities within subaqueous lease areas, shellfish aquaculture reporting requirements, and prohibited activities.
