Delaware State Parks Celebrates Earth Day 2008
with Events Throughout the State
 

Delaware - Each year, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, the anniversary of the first Earth Day in 1970. For 2008, Delaware State Parks has planned programs, events and activities throughout the state. Federal, state and local governments and environmental organizations throughout the country promote Earth Day events to encourage the protection of the nation’s natural, historic and cultural resources.  

By participating in these exciting events, visitors can do their part to help conserve Delaware’s precious resources:

Bellevue State Park

Christina River Cleanup at Fox Point State Park
8 a.m. – noon, Saturday, April 19
Join us at Pavilion B at Fox Point State Park on the Delaware River to help clean up the river. To find out more about the Christina River Cleanup or to register as a volunteer, call Denise Magnani, Park Volunteer Coordinator, at 302-761-6963.

New Castle County’s 4th Annual Safe Kids Day
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19
Activities will include a bike rodeo, a car seat safety station, fire and water safety activities, a smoke house fire prevention model, games, prizes and much more. There is no fee for admission. This event will be held rain or shine.

Earth Day Concert
1 p.m., Saturday, April 19
Come to Bellevue on Earth Day weekend and enjoy a concert at our outdoor band shell. Bring your chairs or blanket and a picnic lunch, and be sure to bring the entire family!

Bellevue Arts Center Earth Day Poster Contest
The Arts Center at Bellevue State Park is sponsoring its third annual Earth Day Poster Contest. The theme for this year’s contest is “Leave No Trace.” Finalists’ posters will be displayed in the Bellevue Arts Center. Contest winners will be announced at our Earth Day Concert. Kite Day
1 - 3 p.m., Saturday, April 19
Celebrate Earth Day at this once-a-year event by making your own kite! Join us for a day of fun and learning and soar to new heights in the great outdoors. The program fee is $2 per kite. This program is suited for all ages.

Earth Day Delight

It’s good to live on Mother Earth! Help us celebrate nature and the environment by participating in a full day of nature walks, crafts and other activities at the Nature Center. 

Birding Trip: Raptors and Other Spring Migrants
8 - 11:30 a.m.
Explore Cape Henlopen searching for migratory birds heading north. $2 per person.

Tadpole Tale Trek
11 a.m. - noon
Hike in search of tadpoles, frogs and salamanders. FREE 

Recycled Crafts
Noon-1:30 p.m.
Make crafts inspired by the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. FREE

Snakes, Turtles and Mother Earth
2 - 3 p.m.
Learn how snakes and turtles help keep our planet healthy. $2 per person

Earth Day Beach Clean-Up at Fenwick Island State Park
11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Sunday, April 20
Celebrate Earth Day with a pre-season clean-up at Delaware State Parks’ “quiet beach,” Fenwick Island State Park. Come dressed for the weather! The clean-up is open to all, but we ask that groups of 10 or more call 302-227-6991 ahead of time to make sure we have enough supplies on hand.

DSWA Earth Day Celebration
Saturday, April 19
The Delaware Solid Waste Authority will be hosting the eighth annual Earth Day Celebration at Killens Pond State Park. There will be activities for everyone, including hayrides, inflatables, arts and crafts, demonstrations from local artists, and much more.

Celebrate Earth Day!

White Clay Creek Clean-Up
8:30 a.m.
Meet at the Chambers House Nature Center to receive gloves and garbage bags. Groups should pre-register by calling the Park Office at 302-368-6900. Parking is limited, and large groups are encouraged to meet at the Carpenter Recreation Area and carpool.

Visit the Nature Center
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Learn how things you do today can make our world a better place for future generations!  Ask about volunteer projects or other ways to help the park.

Hike to the Tri-State Marker
11 a.m.
Bring a bag lunch and join the park naturalist on a hike to Mason and Dixon’s Tri-State Marker.

Earth Day Celebration 2008:  Party for the Planet! 
10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, April 19
Take a walk on the WILD side this year in celebration of our fragile earth. Live entertainment, Earth Day-related games, stories, crafts, live animal presentations and more are all part of the day’s fun! This celebration is free with paid admission to the Zoo.
