Delaware Students to compete in State Envirothon on April 14
DOVER (April 6, 2011) - Ninety students from around the state will converge at Blackbird Creek Reserve in Townsend, Delaware on Thursday, April 14 to compete in the 16th Annual Delaware Envirothon. These students, representing nine high schools and one 4-H club, will compete for more than $3,000 in college scholarships and awards.
The Envirothon is a team-based outdoor academic competition which challenges high school students’ knowledge and practical application of aquatic ecology, forestry, soils/land use, wildlife, special environmental topics and public speaking. This year’s teams come from the following: A. I. DuPont High School, Charter School of Wilmington, Hodgson Vo-Tech High School, Caesar Rodney High School, Smyrna High School, St. Elizabeth High School, Dover High School, Polytech High School, Sussex Tech High School and Kent County 4-H.
Hosted by the Delaware Association of Conservation Districts (DACD), the Envirothon offers students monetary awards for their higher education purposes and commendable efforts. Eighteen teams, consisting of five students each, will compete for an annual $3,000 renewable four-year scholarship to attend Wesley College in Dover. Second, third and fourth place teams will receive $300, $150 and $100 team awards, respectively. The winning team will also advance to represent Delaware in the 2011 Canon Envirothon at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada from July 24-29.
The goal of the Delaware Envirothon is to prepare students to be future leaders in environmentally related careers, and provide knowledge about our environment. The competition provides experience in real world situations, which fosters sound decision making, problem solving and critical thinking skills. Teams will be tested at outdoor ecostations located throughout designated areas of the Reserve.
Registration for the competition begins at 8:30 a.m. and the awards ceremony will begin around 1:30 p.m.
The DACD is a voluntary, non-profit association that coordinates conservation efforts statewide to focus on natural resource issues identified by Delaware’s three local districts.
