Environmental Stewardship Program Invites the Public to Recognize National Invasive Weed Awareness Week
LEWES, Del. – In recognition of National Invasive Weed Awareness Week, Feb. 22 – 27, 2009, Southern Invasive Plant Management Crew of the Division of Parks and Recreation’s Environmental Stewardship Program will be hosting a volunteer workday from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, February 21 at Cape Henlopen State Park. The focus will be on the removal of several non-native shrubs including bush honeysuckle, multiflora rose, and privets. These invasive shrubs are a serious threat to the habitat of our native plant species and have the ability to spread throughout the park.
The public is encouraged to spend a morning in the park to help stop the spread of these invasive shrubs. Environmental Stewardship Program staff will assist with identification of the shrubs as well as native plants. Volunteers should wear work clothes and sneakers or boots. Gloves and tools will be provided, but volunteers may bring their own.
More information is available by calling Ashley Kroon at 302-242-6004 or via e-mail at Ashley.Kroon@state.de.us .
