First State Heritage Park at Dover commemorates
Veterans Day with special tours on Nov. 11
DOVER - This Veterans Day holiday, Wednesday, Nov. 11, the following First State Heritage Park sites are opne from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for tours and exhibits: Legislative Hall, the Biggs Museum of American Art, the Old State House and the First State Heritage Park Visitor Center. All sites and activities are free of charge. Centrally-located, all-day free parking is available at the First State Heritage Park Visitor Center at the Delaware Public Archives, 121 Duke of York Street, Dover.
The Park will offer two special tours honoring Delaware veterans from the 18th century to modern day:
Military Heroes of Delaware Tour - 12:30 p.m., Legislative Hall
This special 30-minute guided tour of the paintings at Legislative Hall will focus on the Gallery of Military Heroes. The Gallery features Delawareans such as Colonel Samuel Davis, hero of the War of 1812; James Parke Postles, who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg; Major George Welch, a fighter pilot at Pearl Harbor; Sgt. William Lloyd Nelson, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service during WWII, and many others.
Dover’s Heroes of the Revolution Tour - 2 p.m., meet at Christ Church at the corner of South State and Water Streets)
The tour moves from the monuments of Christ Church to those of the Old Presbyterian Churchyard, with visits to the graves and former residences of Dover’s Revolutionary War heroes, including John Haslet, hero of the Battle of Princeton, and Caesar Rodney. The stories of their heroism and the sacrifices that they made will be a part of the tour.

The First State Heritage Park at Dover is Delaware’s first urban “park without boundaries” linking historic and cultural sites in the city that has been the seat of state government since 1777. The park is a partnership of state agencies, under the leadership of Delaware State Parks, working in collaboration with city and county government, nonprofit organizations and the private sector.
