First Two Piping Plover Nests Found at Gordon’s Pond
Two piping plover nests have been found this week, both at Gordon’s Pond at Cape Henlopen State Park and both are at one egg each as of today.
“Since the plovers lay one egg every other day, we don’t expect a full clutch of four eggs until mid-week next week,” said Matt Bailey, wildlife biologist with DNREC’s Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program.
The plovers at the Point are not likely to be far behind. At least four pairs have staked out territories at the Point and some of the birds are acting very defensive around their chosen nesting areas.
American Oystercatchers also are regularly present at the Point, with pairs chattering at each other out on the tidal flats. Some oystercatcher tracks and one scrape (practice nest) have been found in the interior of the Point.
