Hospitality Industry Awarded Grants for Pollution Prevention Projects
DOVER, Del. – Three grants have been awarded to the Delaware hospitality industry for projects that will prevent pollution by conserving energy and water resources, recycling and other sustainable practices. The grant funds, which total $11,999, were provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Delaware Pollution Prevention Program grant.
According to Crystal Nagyiski, manager of DNREC’s Pollution Prevention Program, the proposals were accepted based on the project’s plans to implement sustainable practices that reduce pollution and conserve energy and natural resources.
• $ 4950 to the Delaware Hotel and Lodging Association to implement and demonstrate the cost and environmental effectiveness of single stream recycling programs in five Delaware lodging facilities, primarily members of the Delaware Green Lodging Program.
• $ 4110 to The Bellmoor Inn and Spa in Rehoboth Beach to sponsor an environmental hotel and restaurant student internship from a local college or university. The student will evaluate the hotel and restaurant’s daily operations, which will be used to develop projects in energy and water conservation, source reduction and changing behaviors.
• $ 2939 to The Bellmoor Inn and Spa to implement an energy-conserving lighting retrofit in all guest rooms and common areas and to implement a single stream recycling program.
DNREC’s Pollution Prevention Program provides non-regulatory assistance to Delaware businesses, industries, community organizations, government entities, and other groups to help identify and implement cost effective pollution prevention programs and sustainable practices.
