Kayak Capsizes Off South Bowers, Kayaker Treated and Released
A 47-year-old Maryland woman was thrown into the water off South Bowers Beach Saturday afternoon, April 26, when her one-person kayak capsized in heavy seas and high winds. Three other kayakers in one-person craft were out with her on the Delaware Bay that afternoon.
As Fish and Wildlife Enforcement officers and the South Bowers Fire Company responded, the kayaker was able to reach the shore. The Fish and Wildlife officers took two South Bowers emergency medical technicians about a mile down the beach by four-wheel drive to her location. South Bowers also responded with a six-wheel utility vehicle.
The woman was treated for hypothermia at the scene and released.
“Boaters are reminded to monitor the marine weather forecast and not to solely rely on the National Weather Service forecast, which usually gives the weather for inshore. Winds are often stronger on the water than on land and can increase suddenly, catching smaller boats off guard,” said Sgt. Gregory Rhodes, Fish and Wildlife Enforcement spokesman.
