Maritime Heritage Festival at Indian River Life-Saving Station

REHOBOTH BEACH (July 27, 2011) – The Indian River Life-Saving Station will host its Maritime Heritage Festival on Sunday, July 31 from noon to 5 p.m. at the restored Life-Saving Station just north of the Indian River Inlet Bridge. 

The festival will feature entertainment, food, crafts and games that celebrate Delaware’s maritime heritage.  Matthew Dodd will offer “Songs and Stories of Old Sailing Days” at 1 and 3:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., the interpretive staff at the Life-Saving Station, dressed in the uniforms of the surfmen of the early 20^th century, will demonstrate the Breeches Buoy Drill that was used to rescue survivors of shipwrecks off the coast of Delaware in the days before the Coast Guard.

Throughout the day, families will enjoy crafts, games, face-painting and exhibits by the Milton and Lewes Historical Societies, the U.S. Coast Guard, Zwaanendael Museum and more.  Food will be available to purchase from the Indian River Marina Café and General Store. 

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for ages 4 to 12, and include tours of the Life-Saving Station Museum.  Children under 3 are admitted free of charge.  Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 302-227-6991 or at the door.  More information is available at www.destateparks.com.
