Massey’s Landing ramp reopens after boat fire
MILLSBORO (July 27, 2012) – DNREC’s Massey’s Landing boat ramp reopened around noon today after an early morning boat fire caused the ramp to close for almost six hours while the Indian River Fire Company extinguished the blaze and emergency personnel removed the charred hulk from the water.
Sgt. Gregory Rhodes of DNREC Fish & Wildlife Enforcement said that an investigation continues into the cause of the fire that burned the 21-foot Chris-Craft center console boat to the water line.
The boat’s owner detached the trailer from his vehicle when the boat caught fire. As the boat was ablaze on the water, the trailer floated beyond the ramp and into the Massey’s Ditch channel before sinking. DNREC Fish & Wildlife Enforcement was using side-scan sonar to locate the trailer – which went down in deeper water and did not pose a navigational hazard – and raise it when found.
