Meet Characters from Dover’s 18th Century Past at First State Heritage Park’s New Storytelling Programs on The Green
DOVER, Del. - This summer, the First State Heritage Park at Dover presents a new storytelling program, “Voices from Dover’s Past,” Monday through Saturday on The Green. Visitors will meet the 18th century characters French Battell and his wife Elizabeth, who ran the Golden Fleece Tavern, as well as several members of the Ridgely family, and hear their tales of loyalist rebellions, taverns, celebrations and romance.
These free, 15-minute presentations are offered at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays through August 22. Free, 45-minute walking tours of Dover’s historic district follow the storytelling programs at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
“These programs are like mini-plays acted out under the shade of a tree on The Green. Portraying real people from Dover’s 18th-century past lets us connect modern visitors with the spirit of the times during the revolution and birth of our nation. The stories offer lots of variety and we will be rotating different stories each day,” said historical interpreter Nate Davidson, who portrays French Battell.
