Military veterans and their family members urged to sign up
for new Delaware State Parks Conservation Corps
DOVER (August 26, 2015) – Applications are being accepted now from military veterans and/or their family members to work in a new conservation program offered by DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation. The program, “Delaware State Parks Conservation Corps – Veterans Corps,” is part of the AmeriCorps National Service Program. It will engage veterans and military family members in a year of service performing conservation work throughout state parks.
Delaware State Parks was awarded a $64,000 competitive grant to fund the program by CNCS (Corporation for National and Community Service.) Just 93 of 257 applicants were awarded grants for 2015-2016. Delaware State Parks was the only AmeriCorps program for veterans awarded in Delaware.
“Delaware State Parks is excited to be awarded this nationally competitive grant,” said Delaware State Parks Director Ray Bivens. “The opportunity to tap into the incredible experience and talents our military veterans and family members have to offer will change lives and leave a lasting impact on the stewardship of Delaware’s state parks.”
Applications are being accepted now on the Delaware State Parks website www.destateparks.com/veteranscorps. The program will begin Oct. 1 and end in Aug. 2016. Benefits will include a bi-weekly living allowance; health, dental and vision insurance; child care assistance and an education award.
Veterans Corps members will perform outdoor conservation work throughout state parks. They will receive training, certifications and hands-on experience which can help them gain the skills and experience necessary for employment in the natural resources field.
Projects will include:
· Trail construction, trail reconstruction, and maintenance;
· Invasive plant surveys, identification and control by mechanical and chemical removal;
· Parks meadow and shoreline maintenance.
