More volunteers needed for Oct. 8 boardwalk painting project
at DNREC Aquatic Resources Education Center
EAST OF SMYRNA (Oct. 3, 2011) – The DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife is seeking more volunteers to help paint the boardwalk at the Aquatic Resources Education Center (AREC) near Smyrna on Saturday, Oct. 8. Two shifts are planned: 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., with lunch provided for volunteers who participate in both shifts.
The center provides environmental education programs for school groups, youth groups and adults. These programs focus on the Delaware estuary and rely on the center’s 940-foot boardwalk for access to the marsh behind the center – and the boardwalk is in need of a new coat of sealant.
“The Aquatic Resources Education Center is located in a beautiful place on the edge of the marsh to spend an afternoon of volunteering, and this project needs many hands, so we hope plenty of volunteers will come out to help,” said Lynne Staub, volunteer coordinator for the Division of Fish and Wildlife.
Project involves use of paint sprayers and brushes. Volunteers for this project must be 18 years old and should wear old clothes and shoes. Volunteers also are strongly encouraged to pre-register with contact information in case of inclement weather leading to postponement. The Aquatic Resources Education Center is located at 4876 Hay Point Landing Road, Smyrna.
