New Schoolyard Rain Garden
DOVER (July 1, 2015) – The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation, and the Children in Nature Coalition are partnering with the Caesar Rodney School District to design and construct a schoolyard rain garden. A groundbreaking and planting will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 2 at W. Reilly Brown Elementary School, 360 Webbs Lane in Dover.
The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary provided funds to purchase plants and mulch for the rain garden, as well as support to help coordinate the effort. Once complete, the garden will serve as an outdoor classroom for students to learn about native plants and animals, as well as stormwater facts.
The project marks another step forward in the effort to provide accessible, safe and enjoyable outdoor learning opportunities for children. Outdoor experiences have been shown to improve health and support student academic outcomes, as well as preparing young people to tackle future environmental challenges.
