New Killens Pond Nature Center
Reflects Delaware State Parks’
Commitment to the Environment
FELTON, Del. – Members of the community, Delaware Legislature and Delaware State Parks joined Governor Ruth Ann Minner to dedicate the new Killens Pond Nature Center on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008. The new center, along the banks of Killens Pond, sits at the point where the pond and the forest meet and creates a gentle transition between the two.
The center’s open design is intended to allow visitors to enjoy the natural setting that surrounds the building. Covered decks surround the upper level, and meeting rooms on the upper level and a laboratory on the lower level provide meeting space and opportunities for environmental education.
The building was designed and constructed following Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles and is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council as an environmentally-friendly structure. The building has innovative rainwater collection and on-site wastewater treatment, as well as unique geothermal features.
Besides public programming and environmental education, the building also offers rental meeting space. More information is available by calling the Killens Pond State Park Office at 302-284-4526.
Killens Pond State Park is located 13 miles south of Dover, about one mile off of U.S. Route 13 and about eight miles off Route 113. The park’s main entrance is on Killens Pond Road; the campground entrance is on Paradise Alley Road.
