Nominations Extended Till June 6
for Young Environmentalist Awards

The deadline to nominate Delaware students for the 2008 young Environmentalist of the Year Awards has been extended until Friday, June 6, the DNREC Public Affairs Office announced today.

“It’s a busy time of year, and we’ve had a number of requests for more time to get the nominations in,” explained Young Environmentalist Awards Coordinator Joanna Wilson. “Hopefully this extension will give busy teachers, parents and club leaders the time they need to nominate more of our wonderful young environmentalists.”

A winner will be chosen from each of the following categories, based on actions or projects which have taken place between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008:

  • Elementary for students in grades 1-4
  • Middle School for students in grades 5-8
  • High School for students in grades 9-12

The Young Environmentalist program honors Delaware students whose actions have resulted in the protection, restoration or enhancement of Delaware’s natural resources through one or more of the following means: demonstrating environmental stewardship, initiating an innovative project, increasing public awareness, and demonstrating environmental ethics.

This is the 15th year for the award, which was established by DNREC colleagues and friends in honor of Dr. Edwin H. Clark II, who served as Secretary of DNREC from 1989 until 1993.

Winners will be honored in a special ceremony on Governor’s Day at the Delaware State Fair Thursday, July 24. A $100 U.S. savings bond and a gift certificate for a canoe, kayak or pontoon boat trip in one of Delaware’s State Parks will be awarded to each category winner in recognition of his or her contribution to the community. Bella’s Cookies, an organic and natural bakery in Sussex County, will join DNREC in co-sponsoring this year’s awards, and will present gift baskets to the winners.

Nominations may be sent to Joanna Wilson, DNREC Public Affairs Office, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, DE 19901, emailed to joanna.wilson@state.de.us, or faxed to her attention at 302-739-6242.
