Political prisoners of the Civil War to be highlighted during Fort Delaware State Park’s July POW Weekend

DELAWARE CITY (July 7, 2011) – On the second weekend of each summer month, Fort Delaware hosts visiting living history groups who partner with the Fort’s interpretive staff to create POW Weekend, a memorable visitor experience. Guests should not be surprised to be stopped at the moat by an overzealous guard or two. These programs are included in visitors’ ferry ticket price.

Guests of the Government is the theme for the July POW Weekend on July 9 and 10. Throughout the day, visitors will learn about ordinary citizens who were suspected of disloyalty and arrested and imprisoned. Visitors are invited to return in August for Taking up Arms - Artillery and Weaponry at Fort Delaware, on Aug. 13 and 14, to check out the firepower at Fort Delaware and take part in a gun drill.

Access to Pea Patch Island is by ferry from either Delaware City or Fort Mott, New Jersey. Ferry tickets cost $11 for adults, $6 for children ages 2 through 12 and $10 for seniors and active duty military (with ID). Children under 2 are admitted free of charge.

Reservations are suggested, but visitors may purchase tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations may be made by calling 877- 987-2757 or visiting www.destateparks.com. Tickets may only be reserved 24 hours in advance.
