Pre-season lottery applications for reserved
deer or goose hunts are due by mail Sept. 15

The Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife wants to remind hunters that lottery applications for a reserved deer or goose hunt on several State wildlife areas, parks and forests must be received in the Division’s Dover office no later than Sept. 15, 2009.

“The Division has been offering this reserved hunt opportunity for several years,” said Ken Reynolds, a program manager with the Division’s Wildlife Section. “Last year, approximately 1,000 hunters signed up for the lottery.”

Reserved hunts for deer are available in New Castle County at the Augustine and Cedar Swamp wildlife areas, along with Fort DuPont and Brandywine Creek state parks and Blackbird State Forest. In Kent County, deer and goose hunts are available at Woodland Beach and Ted Harvey wildlife areas. Daily lotteries are still conducted on most of the areas but the reserved hunt system guarantees at least one day in the field.

“For deer hunting, we only hold reserved hunts on the most popular days of the season,” said Wildlife Section Administrator Greg Moore. “During the rest of the season, there always seems to be enough spots to accommodate everyone who wants to hunt.”

An application form for the reserved hunts can be found on page 46 of the 2009 Delaware Hunting and Trapping Guide. An online version of the guide is also available at www.fw.delaware.gov, and hunters can print the application form on their home printer.

Hunters participating in lottery hunts on these areas are reminded that they will need to have the $20 public land permit with them the day of the hunt. These permits are available where hunting licenses are sold.

Applications for all reserved hunts should be mailed to Wildlife Section, Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

For more information, please call the Wildlife Section at 302-739-9912 or 302-735-3600.
