Public hearing on proposed amendment to Atlantic menhaden
management plan rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 2

DOVER (Oct. 31, 2012) – The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) public hearing in Delaware to gather public comment on a proposed draft amendment to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Menhaden has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 in the DNREC Auditorium at 89 Kings Highway in Dover. ASMFC’s Delaware hearing, postponed from earlier this week by Hurricane Sandy, is among menhaden management plan hearings on an economically and ecologically important forage fish species being held by the ASFMC in other Atlantic coastal states.

The draft amendment provides a suite of options to manage and monitor menhaden stock and to end overfishing toward restoration of the spawning stock with the intention of increasing the menhaden population. It also seeks to establish a process to set and allocate total allowable catch (TAC), including procedures to close the fishery when a certain percentage of the TAC is reached. Final action on the amendment is anticipated in December.

Fishermen and other interested groups are encouraged to provide input by either attending the public hearing or providing written comments. Draft Amendment 2 may be viewed at under Breaking News or by calling the Commission at 703-842-0740. Public comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 and should be mailed to Mike Waine, Fishery Management Plan Coordinator, 1050 N. Highland St., Suite 200 A-N, Arlington, VA 22201;fax to 703-842-0741 or email to with subject line: Draft Amendment 2.
