Public hearing on summer flounder management set for Oct. 6
DOVER (Oct. 1, 2014) – The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC) will hold a joint public hearing regarding the future direction of summer flounder management in Delaware waters at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, in the DNREC Auditorium at 89 Kings Highway, Dover.
A comprehensive amendment to the summer flounder fishery management plan is being developed, and this hearing will provide an opportunity for members of the public to provide input on summer flounder management. The public is encouraged to submit comments regarding the range of potential issues to be addressed in the amendment.
The ASMFC and MAFMC are particularly interested in comments on the following topics:
· Fishery management plan goals and objectives
· Quota allocation between the commercial and recreational fisheries
· Commercial management measures and strategies
· Recreational management measures and strategies
· Discards in the commercial and recreational fisheries
· Ecosystem, habitat, by-catch, and protected species issues
· Data collection requirements and protocols
“This is an excellent opportunity for the public to provide input to ASMFC and MAFMC on issues related to summer flounder – changes they’ve observed in the fishery or changes they’d like to see regarding management, enforcement or research,” said Delaware Fisheries Administrator John Clark.
