Public meeting set for April 27 on future
of Brandywine Hundred Yard Waste Demonstration Site

In response to Delaware Senate Bill 190 (the Bond Bill), DNREC’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Branch will hold a public meeting to provide information and solicit comments on the future of the Brandywine Hundred Yard Waste Demonstration Site. The meeting will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27 at Mount Pleasant Elementary School, 500 Duncan Road, Wilmington. Future options for the site include relocation and the potential for closure if a suitable relocation site is not found.

The following language was added to last year’s Bond Bill by the 145th General Assembly, referring to the Brandywine site, one of the three sites in New Castle County: “The Department shall relocate the yard waste disposal site currently located at the Cauffiel Estate to a new location suitable for residents within the surrounding area.”

In Senate Joint Resolution 2 (SJR 2) issued two years ago by the 144th General Assembly, DNREC and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority were required to open and operate at least three demonstration community yard waste sites available to the public for disposal and recovery of residential yard waste “for as long as feasible.”

At the meeting, DNREC will address concerns about the site expressed by local residents, alternative sites explored, costs of maintaining yard waste sites, alternatives for yard waste disposal and a closure plan for the site in the event it is closed.

Written comments also will be accepted and must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, by email to james.short@state.de.us or by mail to DNREC – Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Branch, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, DE 19901, Attn: Jim Short.

For more information, call the Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Branch at 302-739-9403.
