Recent DNREC scrap tire recycling drop-off day
in Georgetown collects almost 39 tons of tires

DOVER (March 30, 2015) – Delaware’s Scrap Tire Management Program, administered through DNREC’s Division of Waste & Hazardous Substances, recently sponsored its 14th scrap tire drop-off day in the state and netted 38.81 tons of old and disused tires for recycling. The March 21 event in Georgetown removed some 3,100 scrap tires from the state’s landscape where they lay as potential health and environmental hazards.

The drop-off days provide Delaware residents with an opportunity to recycle scrap tires while helping to reduce the environmental and health hazards associated with piles of scrap tires in communities. The program is funded by a fee of $2 per tire on the sale of new tires in the state. The fee is diverted to the Scrap Tire Management Fund, a matching fund and program created to clean up longstanding scrap tire piles statewide.

Delaware residents may bring up to 10 passenger vehicle or light truck tires for recycling at each scrap tire drop-off day. Since DNREC’s first drop-off day in 2008, almost 545 tons of tires have been collected for recycling.

DNREC’s next scrap tire drop-off day is scheduled for Saturday, May 16 at the Delaware State Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., rain or shine.

For assistance in removing a qualifying scrap tire pile (a pile of more than 100 tires that existed before July 1, 2006) from your property, or anything related to Delaware scrap tire management, please visit DNREC’s website at or contact the Scrap Tire Management Program at 302-739-9403.
