Rep. V. George Carey Receives Legislative Award from Delaware Association of Conservation Districts
The Delaware Association of Conservation Districts (DACD) presented Rep. V. George Carey, R-Milford, with the Association’s Legislative Award at their annual meeting held on Jan. 14 at Maple Dale Country Club in Dover. The award is presented annually to a legislator for outstanding service, loyalty and devotion to conservation efforts in the state of Delaware.
Rep. Carey has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1984, when he immediately became involved in conservation issues in Sussex County and the state of Delaware. He has sponsored legislation related to tax ditches, natural areas and state resource areas. He has been a key supporter in the Legislature to appropriate funds for conservation cost-share, drainage projects and tax ditch maintenance, and the Conservation District Equipment Revolving Fund. Throughout his tenure in the Legislature, Rep. Carey has been a great friend to the conservation districts in Delaware.
Most recently, Rep. Carey's leadership was an integral part of two very important task forces dealing with Delaware's 2,000 miles of tax ditches. He chaired the Tax Ditch Recordation Task Force, which resulted in tax ditch information being made available in the Recorder of Deeds Office in each county. This change allows property owners and the real estate community to be better informed about tax ditches and rights-of-way on property. Rep. Carey was also a key member of the Tax Ditch Right-of-Way Task Force that developed the foundation of House Bill 452, which modified and more clearly defined tax ditch rights-of-way throughout Delaware.
Rep. Carey routinely attends Sussex Conservation District and DACD functions and events. As one of the few farmers remaining in the Delaware General Assembly, he has demonstrated a thorough understanding of and commitment to conservation. Through his work in the Legislature, he has helped ensure an environment where Delaware's conservation districts can continue to conserve our precious resources on the landscape.
“It was an honor to present Representative Carey with the DACD Legislative Award,” DACD President Terry Pepper said. “His commitment to conservation is evident in his actions. We are fortunate to have his support.”
Past recipients of this DACD award include Senators David McBride, Thurman Adams Jr., Nancy Cook, and Gary Simpson and former Rep. Bobby Quillen.
The DACD is a statewide organization for the supervisors of the State’s three conservation districts. DACD is a voluntary, non-profit alliance which provides a forum for discussion and coordination among the State’s Conservation Districts as they work to ensure the wise use and treatment of our natural resources.
