Special One-Day Turkey Hunt for Youth
and Disabled Hunters Set for April 4
A recent DNREC regulatory change has established the Saturday before the start of the general spring turkey hunting season as a special turkey hunting day for youth ages 10 to 15 years old and all non-ambulatory hunters who must use a wheelchair for mobility. This year’s date is Saturday, April 4. The one-day hunt applies only to private lands. State wildlife areas, state forests and state parks will not be open for hunting.
Hunters who are ages 10 to 12 years old are not required to have the turkey hunter education class before participating in the special hunting day. Hunters who are ages 13 to 15 years old must have taken the basic hunter safety class and a Division of Fish and Wildlife-approved turkey hunter education class and are required to have a resident or non-resident junior hunting license.
Older disabled hunters will also need to have taken both training classes and be appropriately licensed to hunt in Delaware. Young hunters must be accompanied by a licensed non-hunting adult who is at least 21 years of age and has also completed a Delaware-approved turkey hunter safety class.
All regulations pertaining to the general turkey hunting season will be in effect during the one-day special hunt. These regulations can be found in the 2008 Delaware Hunting and Trapping Guide, which is available online at www.fw.delaware.gov. Click on Wildlife, scroll down and click on the guide, which is in effect until the 2009 guide is issued in July.
“The Division of Fish and Wildlife hopes veteran turkey hunters will take this opportunity to introduce others to a very exciting and challenging hunting experience,” said Ken Reynolds, supervisor of Game Research for the Division’s Wildlife Section.
