T-Shirts Designed by Wilmington Middle Schooler to Be Prizes from DNREC Nonpoint Source Program at State Fair

Visitors to the DNREC Building at the Delaware State Fair who play the Nonpoint Source Program’s popular trivia game will have an opportunity to take home a piece of a young designer’s work – T-shirts printed with a design by a Wilmington middle school student.

Phoebe Donofrio, a 7th grader at Hanby Middle School in Wilmington created this year’s winning design in the annual NPS T-shirt design contest. Phoebe’s design was chosen out of 84 entries by middle school students throughout the state who created designs inspired by this year’s theme, “Nonpoint Source Pollution Prevention – What Will I Do?”

Phoebe’s teacher, Patricia Tassmer, said her class eagerly took on the contest. “I know a lot of my students go to the State Fair and are looking forward to seeing who won – and they will be really excited that one of their own classmates won,” Tassmer said. “It’s nice to give the students something to shoot for that’s educational, not to mention that the activity fit perfectly with the watersheds unit that we teach,” she added.

“We chose Phoebe’s T-shirt design for its combination of content and style – the message promoting the importance of recycling is simple and direct, and the design is charming and whimsical,” said Jennifer Nelson, T-shirt contest coordinator.

The design has been printed on shirts in Phoebe’s school colors, green and gold. The shirts will be the NPS game’s grand prize.

Through the Clean Water Act, the Delaware Nonpoint Source Program administers a competitive grant which provides funding for projects designed to reduce nonpoint source pollution. NPS pollution is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground, picking up and carrying manmade pollutants such as fertilizers, insecticides, oil, chemicals, salt, bacteria and nutrients from animal waste and septic systems, and depositing them in our waterways and underground water sources. Project may target any source of NPS pollution, but most frequently involve agriculture, construction, marinas, septic systems and hydromodification activities.
