T-shirt design sought to promote 20th Annual Christina River Cleanup
(February 17, 2011) – The Christina Conservancy and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control will soon choose the most environmentally fitting T-shirt design to promote the 20th Annual Christina River Watershed Cleanup, set for Saturday, April 16. The Sixth Annual Christina River Cleanup T-shirt Design Contest is open to all 7th through 12th grade students who attend schools in New Castle County.
The winning design will be featured on T-shirts given to all volunteers and sponsors, and will appear in all promotional materials for the event. The 2010 winning artwork was created by Heather Sowards, from Brandywine High School in Wilmington. The deadline for entries is Friday, Feb. 25, 2011.
The Cleanup’s T-shirt design contest provides students with an opportunity to combine their artistic talents with their vision of conservation and environmental responsibility. It also celebrates the Cleanup’s 20th anniversary of removing man-made debris from within the watershed and raising public awareness for pollution prevention. Since the Cleanup began in 1992, more than 330 tons of tires, appliances, plastics and other items have been cleared from the Christina River, White Clay Creek, Red Clay Creek, and various other tributaries.
The Christina River Watershed provides 75 percent of the public water supply for residents and businesses in New Castle County, so a solid effort is needed annually to keep each of its waterways as free from pollutants as possible.
