The First State Heritage Park at Dover Offers Free Themed Walking Tours on Saturdays in October
Dover, Del. - The staff of the First State Heritage Park hosts free themed walking tours of Dover’s historic district on Saturdays throughout October. The public is encouraged to take one or all of these fun and informative tours.
Governors of the Green
October 4, 2 p.m.
As the location of the Old State House and town center, the Dover Green has a rich history of governors living and working around the square. Their stories and the lasting impact they had on Delaware are the focus of this free tour that begins at the Delaware Visitor Center, 408 Federal Street, Dover.
A Walk Through Time
October 11, 2 p.m.
With over 300 years of history, the Green has been the central and most vital location of commerce, politics, and civic life in Dover, and the site of markets and fairs, suffragists and abolitionists, soldiers and slaves, lawmakers and law breakers. This is a walk through time with stories of the people and events that left their mark on Dover’s history. This free tour begins at the Delaware Visitor Center, 408 Federal Street, Dover.
Victorian Dover
October 18, 2 p.m.
This tour takes in the beautiful homes and stories of the men and women who would forever alter the course of Dover during an age of prosperity, expansion, and transformation. The Victorian Dover National Register Historic District tour covers a lot of ground, so participants should wear comfortable shoes. This free tour begins at Rose Cottage, 102 S. State Street, Dover.
Dover Divided
October 25, 2 p.m.
This tour revisits Dover’s Civil War history, focusing on the stories of the people and events that shaped the city during a time of turmoil. Participants will hear stories of Dover’s role in this great conflict, including the city’s great leaders, how close Delaware came to joining the Confederacy, and the infamous Military Invasion of Delaware. This free tour begins at the Delaware Visitor Center, 408 Federal Street, Dover.

The First State Heritage Park at Dover is a partnership of state agencies, under the leadership of Delaware State Parks, working in collaboration with city and county government, nonprofit organizations and the private sector to create Delaware’s first urban “park without boundaries” linking historic and cultural sites in the city that has been the seat of state government since 1777.
