Victorian Kids Fest Highlights Fort Delaware Weekend
DELAWARE CITY (June 6, 2012) – Looking for something different to do this weekend? Head to Fort Delaware State Park for a variety of exclusive programs for everyone from families and photographers to history buffs.
On Saturday, June 9th, the Delaware Photographic Society hosts a free “Photography 101” program, teaching amateur photographers the techniques of good historical photography. The program takes place at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., local historian Bill Jenkins presents “Mystery of the H.L. Hunley,” which details the story of the ill-fated Confederate submarine that sank off Charleston Harbor.
The highlight of the weekend is the annual Victorian Kids Fest on Sunday, June 10. Co-sponsored by the Fort Delaware Society, the event includes special 19th-century games and craft activities for children at no extra charge. The day also includes a vintage baseball game on the island, as the Diamond State Base Ball Club takes on the Chesapeake Club of Baltimore. The players, clad in authentic uniforms of the day, play by 19th century rules, meaning fielders do not use gloves, foul balls do not count as strikes, and bunting is considered ungentlemanly.
Program reservations are not necessary, but visitors can purchase ferry tickets in advance by calling 1-877-98-PARKS or go to www.destateparks.com. For program questions, call the Fort Delaware State Park office at 302-834-7941.
