Volunteers Sought to Help Spread The Word on Georgetown's
Storm Drains: ‘No Dumping, Drains to Waterway’
Volunteers are being recruited to help mark all storm drains within the Town of Georgetown with attractive medallions stating, “No Dumping, Drains to Waterway.” The Georgetown Storm Drain Marking Event will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 22.
These markers are being placed on drains to remind residents, visitors and business owners not to dump pollutants such as oil and garbage down the storm drains, as they eventually wash into the nearest waterbody. All storm drains in Georgetown run to the Delaware Bay, the Inland Bays, or the Chesapeake Bay.
Before setting out, volunteers will be given instructions by trained group leaders, divided into groups of three or four, and given detailed maps of the storm drains they will be marking. Any participant under the age of 15 will need to be accompanied by an adult.
To register, please contact Angela Townsend with the Town of Georgetown at 302-856-7391 or by email at atownsend@georgetowndel.com.
The Georgetown marking event is a cooperative effort between the Town of Georgetown, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Sediment and Stormwater Program, DNREC Nonpoint Source Program, the University of Delaware Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO), and the University of Delaware Water Resources Agency in an effort to increase awareness of the effects that stormwater pollution can have on water quality.
