White Clay Creek trout stocking rescheduled for Thursday, May 10
DOVER (May 4, 2012) – DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife announced today that the final trout stocking of spring for White Clay Creek, tentatively scheduled to have taken place this week, has been postponed until Thursday, May 10.
Initially, the Division of Fish & Wildlife had planned a stocking of approximately 12.5-inch brown trout in White Clay. However, the hatchery contracted to transport the trout from Pennsylvania noted that the fish were nowhere near that size, and declined to deliver them for stocking.
“It has been very difficult to accommodate our trout stocking needs this year; many hatcheries lost trout in last year’s flooding and Hurricane Irene, severely impacting availability,” said Stewart Michels, DNREC Fisheries Section program manager.
Hatchery staff could not locate alternative sources of certified disease-free brown trout of a size that anglers would find acceptable for White Clay Creek. For the rescheduled stocking next week, rainbow trout will be substituted, and supplemented with smaller numbers of golden rainbows.
