Blackbird Creek Reserve

Everyone is welcome to join us at the Blackbird Creek Fall Festival! It is a celebration that started in 2007 and features traditional crafts and demonstrations, hands-on learning, lively music, kids activities, and lots of fun along the beautiful Blackbird Creek! Best of it all, it’s FREE! So, bring a chair or blanket and spend the day with us - rain or shine Schedule of Activities

 

 

 

 

Wetland Walk
Wednesday, October 22, 2014 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Join us for a walk on the boardwalk at the St. Jones Reserve. Learn about the habitats and the values and functions of the salt marsh.  Enjoy the beauty that surrounds and protects us.  Meet at the St. Jones Reserve.

Lantern Tours
Presented in partnership with the John Dickinson Plantation
Friday, October 24, 2014 6:00-7:00 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m.
Meet at the Visitor's Center at the John Dickinson Plantation to hop aboard a hayride with staff from the St. Jones Reserve.  Tour the planttion by haywagon and learn about the uses and changes of the St. Jones River over the years and the nocturnal life of the estuary. The hayride will take you to the magnificent entrance of the John Dickinson Plantatino where you will be greeted y interpreters and Sea Shanties for a lantern tour of the mansion and nighttime entertainment that would have taken place in the 18th century.  A walk back to the Visitor's Center will welcome you with cookies and cider.  Space is limited.  Registration is required by calling the John Dickinson Plantation 302.739.3277

NovemberCanoes along the Blackbird Creek

Paddle Adventure on the Blackbird (must be 14 or older to paddle)
Wednesday, November 5, 2014 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Take an adventure up Blackbird Creek to observe the various habitats and wildlife in and along the creek. Wear comfortable clothing. Life jackets will be provided and are required to be worn. Canoeing experience is preferred but not required. The canoe trip will meet at the Blackbird Creek Reserve component at 801 Blackbird Landing Road in Townsend, Del. Space is limited. You must be at least 14 years of age to paddle.

Bayberry Candle Making
Saturday, November 15, 2014 10:00 a.m. - Noon
Discover the amazing uses of the bayberry shrub!  A Reserve naturalist will discuss the ecology of the bayberry while the John Dickinson Plantation staff and volunteers will give insite to the historical use of the plant as we enjoy the art of candle making.  What a wonderful way to start off the holidays.  This program meets at the John Dickinson Plantation, 340 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover DE.  Space is limited.

Coastal Heritage Driving Tour
Tuesday, November 18, 2014 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m

Join staff to discover the natural and historic resources of the Delaware Bay communities.  Board the van and head out for a day of adventure along the Delaware Bayshore.  There will be a stop for lunch along the way. Space is limited, must be 18 years old or older.

Hay-Wagon Tour of the Blackbird Creek Reserve
Tuesday, December 2, 2014 11 a.m. - noon.

Hop aboard the Reserve's hay wagon for a tour of the Blackbird Creek Reserve and learn about the habitats, wildlife and Reserve projects that are taking place.  Visit the recent reforestartion projects, tree plantings, and other on-going projects.  Meet in the parking lot at 801 Blackbird Landing Road in Townsend, DE.
