6th Annual Blackbird Creek Fall Festival
Saturday, October 19, 2013 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Join us for a fun-filled day for the entire family! Enjoy the sounds of live music; explore the Reserve by foot or by hayride; visit the numerous vendors and exhibitors; and take part in fun demonstrations, kid’s crafts, and free face painting. Admission is free! Rain or shine. The Festival will be held at the Blackbird Creek Reserve at 801 Blackbird Landing Road in Townsend, Del. Arrive early and join the Race for Our Rivers 5K and Fun Walk at 9 am.
The Price of Progress…The Promise of Protection: The St. Jones River

Have you lived in the Dover area and wondered about the River that runs through the capital of the First State? Who lived here? What was the River’s significance in history and what is it today? Join us as we discover the history, cultural heritage, and natural resources of the St. Jones River during the showing of the video entitled The Price of Progress…The Promise of Protection. You will also have the opportunity to speak with one of the naturalists from the St. Jones Reserve. Meet at the Dover Public Library.
Paddle Adventure on the Blackbird
Thursday, October 31, 2013 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Take a canoe adventure up Blackbird Creek to observe the various habitats and wildlife in and along the creek. Wear comfortable clothing. Life jackets will be provided and are required to be worn. Canoeing experience is preferred but not required. The canoe trip will meet at the Blackbird Creek Reserve at 801 Blackbird Landing Road in Townsend, Del. Space is limited. You must be at least 14 years of age to paddle. Space is limited and registration is required.
Autumn Boat Trip on the St. Jones River
Thursday, November 7, 2013 12 p.m. - 2 p.m.
Get ready to board our 24-foot skiff boat as we take an expedition onto the River! This program will meet at Scotton Landing off of Barkers Landing Road in Dover. This boating experiences is designed for ages 5-adult. Life jackets will be provided and are required to be worn on the trip. Space is limited.
Coastal Heritage Driving Tour
Wednesday, November 13, 2013 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Join us as we discover the natural and historic resources of the Delaware Bay Communities. Leave the driving to us as you board our touring van. We will make a stop for lunch along the way. The tour will meet at the St. Jones Reserve at 818 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover DE 19901. This program is designed for participants 16 years of age or older. Space is limited.
Bayberry Candle Making
Saturday, November 16, 2013 10 a.m. – Noon
Discover the amazing uses of the bayberry shrub! A Reserve naturalist will discuss the ecology of the bayberry while the Plantation staff and volunteers will give insight to the historical use of the plant as we enjoy the art of candle making. What a wonderful way to start off the holidays. This program meets at the John Dickinson Plantation, 340 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover, DE19901. Space is limited.
Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and Blackbird Creek Reserve Winter Tree Identification
Tuesday, November 26, 2013 9 a.m. – Noon
This field trip will introduce people to the refuge and to the reserve through tree identification. The trip will begin at Bombay Hook with a tour and walk on the refuge, proceed with a scenic van ride up Route 9 to Blackbird Creek Reserve to enjoy a tour and walk on the reserve, and return to Bombay Hook by noon. At both locations participants will learn how to identify trees and learn the similarities and differences of the habitats. Space is limited.
