The US Department of Transportation has issued rules regarding the number of hours a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) can drive without rest. These rules were put into play to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities associated with drowsy or inattentive drivers and create balance between uniform, consistent enforcement and flexibility within operational guidelines.

There are exceptions to these instances, however, including Local and State Emergency situations.
