Hunting contest winners
The judges’ decisions are in with the winners of the DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife’s second annual fishing
and hunting photo contests, with each contest recognizing first and second place winners and three honorable mentions.
This contest is part of Delaware’s Children in Nature Initiative, a statewide effort to improve environmental literacy
in Delaware, create opportunities for children to participate in enriching outdoor experiences, combat childhood obesity
and promote healthy lifestyles. Delaware’s multi-agency initiative, which partners several state and federal agencies
with community organizations, is part of the national No Child Left Inside program.
Three judges – well-known professional photographer Kevin Fleming, and local photographers Tony Pratt and Freda
Barrett, both DNREC employees – reviewed 52 fishing entries and 44 hunting entries. They narrowed both contests down
to the top five. The contests specified that photographs must have been taken in Delaware and must depict youth participating
in fishing or hunting activities. Judges were looking for photos that best portrayed the “Carrying on the Tradition” theme.
The judges awarded first place to Robin James of Middletown for “Three Generations,” showing
her father, Michael Sethman, her 2-year-old nephew Nicholas Sethman, and her brother, Zach Sethman,
with waterfowl decoys and calls at Augustine Wildlife Area near Delaware City.
Second place: “A Great Day” was taken by Tammy Halsey of Dover, of her son,
14-year-old Christopher Halsey, with his harvest during a waterfowl hunt at the Ted Harvey
Wildlife Area near Dover.
Honorable mention: “A Day on the River,” taken by Derrick Giuttari of Lincoln,
of his son, 7-year-old Hayden Giuttari, Leipsic River near Dover.
Honorable mention: “The Three Musketeers,” was taken by Tammy Halsey of Dover,
showing her 14-year-old son, Christopher Halsey, her 15-year-old nephew, Jeff Gary,
and family dog Yukon in a classic gone-hunting pose at the Little Creek Wildlife Area east of Dover.
Honorable mention: Untitled photo by Amber Miller of Bridgeville, shows 9-year-old Wesley
DeFord and 6-year-old Carlyn DeFord on her family farm in Bridgeville. The photo was
submitted by Susan DeFord of Seaford, the children’s mother.
The winning hunting photos will appear in the 2013-2014 Delaware Hunting Guide. The hunting guide
will be available online, at the DNREC licensing desk in Dover, and at authorized fishing license
dealers statewide in July 2013.
